Egomotion Estimation Using Log-Polar Images

چکیده
We address the problem of egomotion estimation of a monocular observer moving with arbitrary translation and rotation in an unknown environment, using log-polar images. The method we propose is uniquely based on the spatio-temporal image derivatives, or the normal ow. Thus, we avoid computing the complete optical ow eld, which is an ill-posed problem due to the aperture problem. We use a search paradigm based on geometric properties of the normal ow eld, and consider a family of search subspaces to estimate the ego-motion parameters. These algorithms are particularly well-suited for the log-polar image geometry, as we use a selection of special normal ow vectors with simple representation in log-polar coordinates. This approach highlights the close coupling between algorithmic aspects and the sensor geometry (retina physiology), often found in nature. Finally, we present and discuss a set of experiments , for various kinds of camera motions, which show encouraging results.

On the Advantages of Polar and Log-Polar Mapping for Direct Estimation of Time-To-Impact from Optical Flow
The estimation of time to impact is of vital importance for animals as well as for autonomous robots. The optical ow, which is the two-dimensional projection on the retinal plane of the relative, three-dimensional motion between the observer and the objects in the scene can be used to estimate the time to impact. In this paper the application of an anthropomorphic, retina-like visual sensor and...

Log-polar mapping plays a fundamental role in active vision by allowing both a wide eld-of-view and a high-accuity area. While log-polar mapping simpli es certain visual tasks, translation estimation becomes more diÆcult in this domain. However, given the importance of translational motion for mobile target tracking, solving this problem in log-polar space is of great signi cance. In this paper...

Log-polar imaging is an important topic in space-variant active vision, and facilitates some visual tasks. Translation estimation, though essential for active tracking, is more difficult in (log-)polar coordinates. We propose here a novel, conceptually simple, effective, and efficient method for translational motion estimation. It is based on a gradient-based minimization procedure. Experimenta...
